Elaine celebrates the work of the lyricist Alan Jay Lerner and the composer Leonard Bernstein, both of whom would have celebrated their 100th birthdays this month.

Alan Jay Lerner was born on 31st August 1918 in New York, and, along with composer Frederick Loewe, he created some of musical theatre鈥檚 most enduring classics; some 20 shows, among them Camelot, Gigi and Brigadoon. He鈥檚 arguably best remembered though for My Fair Lady, his most frequently revived show, and he also worked with Kurt Weill, John Barry, Andre Previn, Charles Strouse and Burton Lane.

And Leonard Bernstein was born on August 25 1918 in Lawrence, Massachusetts and he got his big break conducting the New York Philharmonic in 1943. His compositions for the Broadway stage include On the Town, Wonderful Town, Candide, and the ever-popular West Side Story.
