Khulisa

Khulisa provides intensive therapeutic and well-being support to young people who have experienced trauma, abuse or neglect. They have helped over 3000 young people to process their traumatic experiences and build their emotional wellbeing and self-confidence in order to lead a healthy, happy and fulfilling life.聽

South African roots

South African roots

Khulisa is a UK charity with South African roots: the word Khulisa means 'to nurture' in Zulu. Their programmes were imported to the UK in 2009 after 25 years of successfully reducing violence and social exclusion in post-apartheid South African communities.聽

Partnerships with schools

Partnerships with schools

Khulisa forms partnerships with schools to support children who are at risk of exclusion due to their troubled past. Without the right support, the life chances of excluded children are poor: only 1% will gain five good GCSEs and they are four times more likely to end up going to prison.聽 Our trained therapists use a combination of group and 1:1 support to help young people explore the root causes of their negative behaviours and over the course of a year, they equip them with the emotional and social skills they need to re-engage with their education and fulfil their true potential.

Jodie

Jodie

Jodie is one of thousands of children who are labelled as a 鈥榩roblem child鈥 at school and find themselves at risk of permanent exclusion.聽 In Jodie's case, she was struggling with the sudden death of her father and her physical disability which made her feel ashamed and humiliated.聽 Her behaviour continued to deteriorate; she became angry, lashing out at friends and family members and refusing to go to school.聽

Support for Jodie

Khulisa鈥檚 team of qualified therapists stepped in to provide much needed support for Jodie and her teachers. They helped Jodie to explore her fears and anxiety, build her self-confidence and learn a range of new coping skills which will help her to manage her emotions more positively.聽 Her behaviour has improved and she is making great progress at school. Talking about her experience with Khulisa, Jodie said: 鈥I feel calmer and able to share how I feel. I can cope better with school and life now鈥.
