Pause For Thought
Matt Woodcock, Church of England Pioneer Minister and Mission Supporter in the Diocese of York:
听
I recently - reluctantly - entered my 43rd year. My birthday was much as I expected it at first.
Egg on toast in bed. A pair of 鈥榙addy smells鈥 socks and a bag of pick 鈥榥鈥 mix as presents from the twins.
And my mum dramatically retelling the story again of how I was born in an ambulance. But catching myself in the mirror that night - belly full of strawberry bootlaces and pink prosecco - I had a shocking middle-aged epiphany.听 I鈥檓 looking really old.听 In the throes of a rapid physical deterioration.
I wobble, creak and crack whenever I stand up or sit down. I鈥檓 turning greyer than Moses.
And to top it all, I鈥檝e now discovered that my eyesight is failing. I need reading glasses. Optician鈥檚 orders.
No more confusing Jesus with Judas for me when Bible reading on Sundays.
Yet despite my new spectacles, I鈥檝e since reflected that I still need to see some things better - in a deeper sense. Particularly people.
At times I鈥檝e been guilty of making quick judgements or forming unfair opinions because of someone鈥檚 lifestyle, appearance, or social media posts.
I鈥檓 beginning to learn what鈥檚 perhaps quite obvious.
That the best way to truly understand a person is to strive to get to know them properly. Discover what makes them tick. Dig a bit deeper.
The wise and honorable character of Atticus Finch in the classic book To Kill A Mockingbird, probably put it best.
He tells his daughter Scout that to really see a person, she must first seek to walk around in their shoes.
To get a feel of life from their perspective.
Jesus made a point of walking with all kinds of people. In doing so I think he saw who they really were, and so could better help meet their need and encourage a more love-filled existence.
In the context of community life, I鈥檓 discovering that making an effort to see each other better not only helps relationships to flourish, but often leads to less conflict, suspicion and prejudice.
As for seeing myself - wrinkles and all - I鈥檓 staying positive.
After all, the Bible says that a gray head is 鈥榓 crown of glory鈥.
And wearing glasses? I鈥檒l get used to them.
They don鈥檛 seem to have done you any harm, Chris.
