Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:

True story... Like many mid-to-low-level comedians, I send out the odd update, to what I call a mailing list but is largely my extended family. But I know now: title your email carefully... Forgive me Chris, for I have blundered.

To encourage email opening, I thought let鈥檚 grab the attention with a bit of 鈥榗lickbait鈥, for the first and, now, last time. This email, simply listing a few gigs, had the deliberately misleading title: 鈥楳eet the new host of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show鈥.

It was a ruse! The recipient opens the email, to read 鈥淢eet the new host in January, when they start鈥︹ 鈥 whoever they are. I鈥檝e got no more knowledge than the next man! (Well the next man is you Chris, so maybe that鈥檚 not true.) But surely, all would see through my little jest鈥

Well. First to congratulate me was my vicar. After a good few seconds, no idea what he was enthusing about, the penny horrifyingly dropped. Phone-call followed text message followed congratulatory email. By mid-morning, my Mum called 鈥 she鈥檇 not been duped, but with her phone ringing off the hook, it was time for my apologetic correction. Tail between legs, I emailed a clarification.

So I鈥檓 now a spreader of fake news. The worrying trend, is there is a rise in internet-fuelled 鈥榓lternative facts鈥. From flat-earthers to Moon Landing hoax claimants, to more seriously, deniers and doubters of major tragedies and wars. Historical revisionism is a concern. If we can鈥檛 trust the history books, what can we trust?

I鈥檝e heard Jesus flippantly referred to as a fictitious character 鈥 yet even non-Christian historians agree: Jesus of Nazareth was born, baptised and crucified. The disagreement is simply: was he who he said he was?

In one teaching, he said: 鈥淟et your yes be yes, let your no be no.鈥 鈥 something I need to do more often. Let my jokes be jokes, let my sincerity be clear. Lead, don鈥檛 mislead. Say what I mean, mean what I say. And know that if I say 鈥榯rue story鈥, it makes everything else sound less true.

So let my sincerity be clear, when I say: Chris, whoever fills that chair, Wogan House will miss you. And that is a true story.
