More about the programme
Cymer Afan Comprehensive, in the village of Cymmer in the Upper Afan Valley, is set to close at the end of the current school year after a decision by Neath Port Talbot county councillors as part of their schools improvement programme.
The 229 pupils have been told they must transfer to a new ‘super school’, Ysgol Cwm Brombil, around 40 minutes’ bus ride away in Margam.
But there's huge opposition to the closure of the school, with many parents considering other options for their children, including home schooling or sending them to Maesteg Comprehensive, over the border in neighbouring Bridgend county borough.
A judicial review over the decision, focusing on issues of equality and the Wellbeing and Future Generations Act, is currently being prepared by lawyers and is expected to be heard in the coming months.Â
