This weekend marks 100 years since the end of the First World War. It鈥檚 impossible not to agonise over the colossal loss of life and sacrifice of so many brave men and women.听 Known at the time as the Great War, it was supposed to be the 鈥榳ar to end all wars鈥�, the final conflict of history.听 Yet just 20 years later, another conflict wreaked havoc across the globe.

听

This weekend will also be the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, an organised pogrom against Jews across Nazi Germany.听 Jewish homes, schools and shops were ransacked, at least 90 Jews murdered, thousands beaten, and some 30,000 were sent to concentration camps.听 The shattered glass that gave the night its name came from more than 260 synagogues that were desecrated and destroyed.

听

Kristallnacht also shattered any illusions about the Nazis鈥� real plan for the Jews.听 Harassment and prejudice quickly give way to physical violence.听 Kristallnacht is widely viewed as the beginning of Hitler鈥檚 final solution 鈥� the Holocaust that led to the brutal murder of millions.

听

Eli Fachler was a remarkable man who passed away three years ago.听 He grew up in Berlin in the building adjacent to his family synagogue where his father was the Torah reader and where he had celebrated his bar mitzvah.听 He watched from the window as the Nazis destroyed his beloved synagogue.听 Frozen to the spot, he heard them shouting and was convinced they would find him and kill him.听 Eli Fachler fled Berlin when he was 15, but he never saw his parents again 鈥� they were murdered by the Nazis.听 Remarkably, Eli returned to Berlin soon before his passing to mark the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht.

听

80 years on, it is chilling to think that just 10 days ago, a far-right extremist attacked a synagogue in Pittsburgh, murdering 11 worshippers and devasting a community.听 At synagogues all over the world 鈥� including mine 鈥� we gathered last Saturday to show solidarity with the victims and that like Eli Fachler, we will not be cowed by the blight of anti-Semitism.

听

Sombre anniversaries 鈥� like the two coming this weekend 鈥� remind us that we have not yet learned the lessons of the 20th century.听 But they also give us hope that with the right resolve and inspiration from the past, we can build a hate-free, better world.
