Pause For Thought
From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:
These cold days remind me of the winters I was privileged to spend in warmer climates.I spent two winters in South Africa, over two decades ago, yet the memory of the glorious sunshine is dwarfed by the even warmer hearts of the people I ministered with.
The greater part of my work was in the most neglected Townships. The poverty was horrendous but the joy shown by the people praying in their tin churches raised my spirits. They left their hovels and trudged through dirt roads, yet always arrived immaculately dressed in white shirts or blouses.
They came to enjoy themselves and were in no hurry home either. They sang and danced their way through services which were never less than two hours short.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu is now an elderly man but then he was their hero; the embodiment of hope for all his people. I went to a service he presided over and felt like giving up on the spot. He was a magnificent communicator.
He raised his people out of their miserable poverty and convinced them of their self-worth by sharing his vision of a loving God and a happy heaven. He told them that 鈥済ood and laughter and justice will prevail.鈥
Freedom was at the centre of his life and spirituality. In his relentless high pitched oratory he told them 鈥淕od is NOT even handed. God is biased in favour of the weak鈥od is always on the side of the one being clobbered.鈥
Then he dropped his voice and closed in on the microphone as he shocked them, and me, explaining that God has such a deep reverence for our freedom that he鈥檇 rather let us freely go to hell than compel us to enter heaven.
His private prayer was 鈥淕od I know you鈥檙e in charge and want us to overcome injustice, but I wish you鈥檇 make it a little more obvious.鈥
Almost a quarter of a century later, I remember how he ended his talk:听 鈥淒o your little bit of good whenever you can; all those little bits added together overwhelms evil.鈥
Exactly what CIN does every year.
