Mercy Ships
Mercy Ships provides life-changing and life-saving surgeries and medical care to the people who need it most.听 Two out of three people in the world can鈥檛 get safe surgical care so Mercy Ships provides this via the world鈥檚 largest charity hospital ship, bringing a crew of volunteer medical professionals directly to the people who desperately need it. In the past 40 years we have helped more than 2.71 million people worldwide.
Valerie and Edith鈥檚 story
We help people like Valerie and her daughter Edith who you will hear in our 大象传媒 Radio 4 Appeal. They are just two of the estimated five billion people who can鈥檛 access surgery even though they were afflicted by large facial tumours which impacted their daily lives. Thankfully, Mercy Ships doctors were able to remove the benign growths for free. Now, Valerie and Edith can lead their lives without fear of ostracisation or stigma.听
Our volunteers and 大象传媒 Radio 4 Appeal presenter
Mercy Ships operates thanks to the generosity and compassion of our donors and the selflessness of our 1100 volunteers, who serve every year.听 Our Radio 4 Appeal presenter Kirstie Randall is one of them and has served as a nurse on the Africa Mercy for more than 10 years. 鈥淲hat we do at Mercy Ships goes beyond healthcare,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 also about helping patients emotionally and letting them know they鈥檙e really loved for who they are.鈥听
Why we serve
At Mercy Ships, we believe everyone deserves access to safe, affordable medical care, no matter where you happen to be born. Sadly 17 million people will die this year from conditions that could be treated or prevented with surgery. Many of these individuals live in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly near the coast. By training local doctors and medical professionals, we鈥檙e able to make a lasting impact that endures long after our ship departs. Together, we can change the odds.听
