Eamonn Magee on life after the ring, GPs appointments, and east Belfast murder.
From top of the world to drink, drugs and prison - former champion Eamonn Magee on life after the ring.
A different start to the programme today. No politics, instead a gripping story of the ups and downs of life - the life of local man and well known former boxer Eamonn Magee. This is the biggest book club in the country, which we do in conjunction with Libraries NI. You can get a copy of the books we feature at your local library - and they also have audio books available. This is the story of an Ardoyne boxer - who throughout his life has battled drug and alcohol abuse, gambling addiction, imprisonment, prosecution for assault, and was left to pick up the pieces after his son was murdered in 2015. The book is called The Lost Soul of Eamonn Magee. This interview does contain some graphic descriptions of what Eamonn has been through. Many issues dealt with within this interview. So we want to give you a few helplines - just incase that chat hit home - and you need some advice or help. You can get more information at the 大象传媒 Actionline - bbc.co.uk/actionline - and you can call Lifeline - 0808 808 8000.
Also on the programme, have you tried getting a doctor's appointment recently? Northern Ireland has the lowest number of GPs per head of population in the UK - just 6.1 per 10,000 patients. And some practices are reporting up to a two-week wait to see a doctor of your choice. The NHS in England is revolutionising GP services in a bid to cut waiting times. As part of a 拢4.5 billion investment, it's starting recruiting 22,000 pharmacists, physios and paramedics who will see patients with minor conditions. And who decides what is a minor condition? Receptionists will question patients about their illness and direct them to a doctor or other medical professional. Stephen spoke to Belfast GP Dr George O'Neill, businessman and Conservative Party member Irwin Armstrong and the commentator Tina Calder.
And, Investigations are continuing into the murder on Sunday night of loyalist Ian Ogle in East Belfast. The 45 year-old suffered a fractured skull, was stabbed 11 times and was left to die on the street. Yesterday, the police said the East Belfast UVF was one of their lines of inquiry. Stephen spoke to Sinn Fein MLA Gerry Kelly and Jamie Bryson.
