Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

I spend most of my life trying to help people find enough hope to go on living well. First, though, I have to cultivate a spirit of hope in my own life.

My guiding principle is that no one is useless who lightens the burden of others. No one is useless who brings light to the world in times of darkness.

I get endless inspiration from personal prayer 鈥� which for me is taking time to reflect on life and measuring my life with what the Gospels teach. It鈥檚 a constant struggle to listen rather than to talk, to be grateful rather than to ask for more.

These days I鈥檓 learning to leave my phone on silent. It鈥檚 far better to take up an actual book, read it and then leave it aside to think about what I鈥檝e read. It鈥檚 simply leaving space to be inspired.

As well as the Gospel, I particularly like our Celtic Wisdom which resonates with my sometimes overly practical brain. I find Celtic wisdom demands personal honesty and that鈥檚 notoriously difficult to achieve but is the only foundation upon which to build your happiness.

听Take for example what Celtic wisdom teaches about lies-:

Sometimes we tell lies to protect the listener; we do not want to communicate a hurtful truth. But sometimes we tell lies to protect ourselves because we don鈥檛 want others to know our truth.

In distinguishing between the two, we often lie to ourselves; we pretend we are protecting others, when we are really protecting ourselves.

If we truly love someone, no lies are right. Love demands the truth. When feelings are hurt, love can heal. When lies are told, love is destroyed.

Most religions I鈥檝e ever studied, offer that piece of wisdom as a basic belief. You cannot love others unless and until you have a healthy appreciation of your own goodness. It鈥檚 only when you love yourself and others that it is possible to really love God.

Psychology books put it more succinctly: 鈥淭he love and attention you always thought you wanted from someone else, is the love and attention you first need to give yourself.鈥澨�
