A Composer Conducts
Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Philharmonia in Sibleius's tone poem Oceanides, Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, and his own Cello Concerto with Truls Mork the soloist.
The charismatic Principal Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra is also a composer with an international reputation and his Cello Concerto is at the centre of this concert featuring music written for and first performed in the USA. The premiere of Sibelius's tone poem Oceanides, which conjures up 'visions of nymphs sporting on the crests of mighty waves', was conducted by Sibelius himself at the Norfolk Music Festival, Connecticut, in 1914. The first outing for fellow Finn Salonen's Cello Concerto, where the soloist 'does battle with a swirling orchestra, a hyperactive set of bongos, and even, through live tape looping, its own shadow', was in Chicago in 2017. And Boston's Symphony Hall, 1944, was where Bart贸k's Concerto for Orchestra, commissioned to show off the individual and collective virtuosity of the local band, first saw the light of day.
Recorded yesterday at the Royal Festival Hall and presented by Martin Handley.
