Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:聽
I was dashing out to an event on Saturday. The whole morning had been one little bit of chaos after another, but finally I could set off 鈥 although I was running very late.聽
I jumped in the car, only to see that the petrol light was flashing. There was no way I had enough to get to my destination.聽
"Aghh!鈥 I sighed, annoyed. 鈥淲hy on earth does this have to happen now?!鈥
Normally, I鈥檓 so used to getting into my car with sufficient fuel and driving where I need to go. I enjoy this blessing because my husband usually sorts the car鈥檚 fuel out, or I do it when I do the weekly shop, but we鈥檇 both been really busy recently and so this ease, which I take for granted every time I hop into our car, was not there. For a moment I was irritated, but then I questioned myself: 鈥淗old on a minute? Why are you annoyed?鈥 鈥淲hat about all the things in life you enjoy the blessings of?鈥 I asked myself. I鈥檓 fortunate 鈥 I get up and there鈥檚 running water. I go to the fridge and there鈥檚 food. I鈥檓 blessed. I only have to worry if something goes wrong. Otherwise the basics of life just run smoothly.聽
But I confess 鈥 I鈥檓 not always consciously grateful. Sure, when I think about things, I鈥檓 of course thankful. But most of the time, I barely notice that I have clean running water 鈥 which is a real privilege compared to so many in the world. Whilst I strive to lead a conscious life, I鈥檓 guilty of taking things for granted; of not appreciating the blessings in my life 鈥 unless and until, they are not there.聽
In the Muslim tradition, the words most beloved by God, are words of thanks and gratitude. In modern psychology 鈥 keeping a gratitude journal for 21 days 鈥 is considered a way to a more contented life, because we are training our brain to notice all our blessings. By consciously noticing what is working on a daily basis, and by being thankful for everything, perhaps a happier, more contented life is possible.聽
And whilst I鈥檓 sure I will soon go back to a state of oblivion, for the moment I鈥檓 going to enjoy appreciating all the good things that every day brings.
