In January a power failure and high winds force oil tanker MV Braer aground on the southern tip of Shetland, under orders from Boris Yeltsin the army storm the Russian parliament building and Nelson Mandela visits Glasgow, acknowledging an emotional association between him and the city.
Millions tuned in around the world to watch The Grand National, however after problems after problems at the start, for the first time in its history the race is declared void.
