Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Tony Miles, Reverend at Methodist Central Hall Westminster:
It was a national embarrassment, Fearne! And I have to confess, it happened at my Church: though I was just a three-year-old at the time. The incident occurred a few months before England hosted the famous 1966 FIFA World Cup. The iconic Jules Rimet trophy was nicked from Methodist Central Hall Westminster on a Sunday, whilst a Church service was in full swing. You see, the valuable World Cup was on display in a glass cabinet, as part of a rare stamp exhibition being held in the building. Somehow, a thief managed to snatch the Cup from under the noses of guards (who were having ‘a break’) and smuggle it out the back door.
I’m sooo glad I wasn’t the minister at the time. Imagine the embarrassment of losing the world cup without even playing a game! Thankfully, Methodist blushes were spared. For 53 years ago today, a black and white Collie, ‘Pickles’, famously sniffed out a package wrapped in newspaper, laying in a South London garden. In short, a bungled attempt to extort ransom money resulted in the stolen trophy being discarded. And it was a canny canine that saved the day. Good dog, Pickles!! And his owner collected a handsome reward. Then, four months later, England won the world cup. The first and only time for one of the home nations, so far! And Pickles was invited to the squad’s celebration banquet - although he did disgrace himself in the hotel lift!
A quaint story. Today’s world is more complex and fastmoving, but embarrassment and losing precious things, are relevant to every age and nation. There are many timeless Bible stories about possessions and people being lost; about a God who rejoices when that which is lost is found; and how those who lose their way can find the right path again. My Roman Catholic friends will often pray to Saint Anthony when they’re desperate to find something. He’s the patron for lost objects. I’m no saint, but I am a Christian ‘Anthony’! So, my prayer today, is for anyone seeking to recover something they’ve lost. And I’m also saying one for all who can’t see a way forward in confusing and challenging times, that those in a pickle, just might find a way through.
