Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Paul Oxley, vicar of St Mark鈥檚 in Milton Keynes:聽
Today鈥檚 the perfect opportunity to tell you about a Fools-Day prank a few cheeky school-kids tried to play when I was a PE teacher. Imagine the scene: I鈥檓 teaching Year 11 lads in the school gym when the press-up competition was interrupted by a commotion in the corner next to the rowing machines. Walking over to see what was happening, a worried looking group, led by a lad named Rory, handed me a small ball of cling-film. "Sir", they said, "we found this, we think it's drugs". I don鈥檛 mind admitting, the narcotics world is not my natural habitat, so while praying for intervention I took possession of the package and opened it. Drugs might not be familiar to me, but I know mixed herbs when I smell them!聽
鈥漅ory鈥 I said, "sprinkle this on a bolognese sauce and serve with spaghetti...not too much though, it smells like pretty strong stuff!" The class fell about laughing. "We just did the same thing in maths" they told me excitedly "you should鈥檝e seen it! The teacher got stressed and yelled that he was enforcing a lock-down! We knew you wouldn鈥檛 fall for it sir, you don't worry about anything!" Although I know what they meant, that鈥檚 not true. I worry about loads. I worry if my kids are OK on the school playground. I worry if the car will pass its MOT, if that mole on my shoulder has changed colour, if the country will be ok next month, if I locked the front door.聽
I once met a Syrian nun. She told me about delivering medicines to the elderly whilst dealing with daily black-outs, bombing raids and food-shortages. I asked how she kept going without being paralysed by worry. 鈥淓asy鈥 she smiled as only the wise and peace-filled people can 鈥渢he Bible says, be thankful in all circumstances鈥 Gratitude, she said, breeds peace. Right or wrong, she seemed to be doing life well, and was the kind of person I want to learn from.聽
Speaking of learning鈥fter school Rory was grounded by his mum for stealing her spices. Cos you know, if you nick herbs you鈥檒l end up serving Thyme.
