Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Tony Miles, Reverend at Methodist Central Hall Westminster:
A couple of weeks ago, a musician died who could’ve become one of the most famous people in the world. His name was Johnny Hutchinson and he turned down an offer to join the Beatles. He never had any regrets about his decision. In the early sixties, ‘Hutch’, as he was known, played for another popular Cavern Club band ‘The Big Three’. When Brian Epstein sacked Pete Best, the original Beatles’ drummer in August 1962, ‘Hutch’, Liverpool’s most accomplished sticksman, stood in for him.
Yet, he never took Epstein’s invitation to become one of the Fab Four. ‘I wouldn’t join the Beatles for a gold clock!’ he told him. Instead, he suggested Epstein ask a talented drummer named … Ringo Starr. It’s said that Ringo is now worth about £220 million. ‘It was a big call’ Hutch said, ‘but I have no regrets …’ Hutchinson’s attitude was amazing. He let go of what could’ve been and didn’t let it screw him up. It’s a great privilege for Christian minsters like me, to help those grieving to prepare funerals for their loved ones.
When people are bereaved, I’ve noticed how often ‘If onlys’ rise to the surface. By then, it’s sadly too late to make amends, so people end up carrying huge regrets: mistakes made; inappropriate words uttered; or sentiments left unsaid. This experience has led me to become a great believer in saying what needs to be said, and trying to do what needs to be done, without delay! In some circumstances, I’ve discovered that regrets can be healthy; they can help me own my mistakes.
The secret is not to let them crush me, but to learn from the past and move on. Christians believe accepting forgiveness from God and others; or even being prepared to forgive myself and others, can be liberating. It’s been said, ‘between tomorrow’s dream and yesterday’s regrets, are today’s opportunities.’ Today is ‘May Day’. Summer’s almost here. To quote the Beatles, ‘Here comes the sun, and I SAY it's all right!’ Today is a good opportunity to turn winter’s blues into summer’s promises! Rest in Peace, Hutch.
