Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:
I hope fathers everywhere are feeling more loved and appreciated this morning, and still basking in good vibes from Father鈥檚 day. Patrick Kavanagh, a rustic and revolutionary Irish poet wrote: 鈥淓very old man I see reminds me of my father.鈥 I know the feeling. Earlier this morning I was convinced I was shaving my father鈥檚 face. The old man peering back at me in the mirror definitely reminds me of my father. Celebrating Father鈥檚 Day has a long tradition. It began in 1898 when Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea. She was 16 when her mother died in Spokane, USA. Sonora with her father took over the role of rearing six younger children.
Later still when Sonora was a mother herself, she heard a sermon in church about the newly established Mother鈥檚 Day. She thought fathers should have their day too and approached the Spokane authorities to make her father鈥檚 birthday, June 5th, a day to honour all fathers. Spokane politicians liked the idea and selected the third Sunday in June as Father鈥檚 Day. That was 109 years ago. It took President Richard Nixon to establish father鈥檚 day as a permanent, national observance, in 1972. Both Father鈥檚 Day and Mother鈥檚 Day give us an opportunity to say thanks to our parents for the sacrifices they made to make us the people we are.聽
Yesterday I was reflecting on some of the gifts my late father gave me. I think the greatest gift my father gave me was that he believed in me 鈥 and that is probably the best gift anyone can give to another human being. I love the story of a young father who was teaching his little son to pray. The boy prayed - : 鈥淒ear God make me the kind of man my daddy is.鈥 Later that night the father himself prayed -: 鈥淒ear God make me the kind of man my son thinks I am.鈥 Maybe that鈥檚 why Pope John XX111, said-: 鈥淎nyone can be a father; but it takes a special person to be a dad.鈥
