SYNOPSIS

ACT I

A lonely grove鈥擡uridice鈥檚 grave.

Nymphs and shepherds lament the death of Euridice, who was bitten by a snake (鈥淎h, se intorno a quest鈥檜rna funesta鈥). Left alone, Orfeo, Euridice鈥檚 husband, adds his voice to the rites (鈥淐hiamo il mio ben cos矛鈥). Only Echo replies. Orfeo vows to rescue Euridice from the underworld (鈥淣umi! barbari numi鈥).

Amor, god of love, appears with word that Jove, pitying Orfeo, will allow him to descend into the land of the dead to retrieve Euridice. To make this trial more difficult, Orfeo must neither look at Euridice, nor explain why looking is forbidden. Otherwise he will lose her forever (鈥淕li sguardi trattieni鈥). Orfeo agrees and begins his voyage.听

ACT II

The Gate of Hades.

Furies and ghosts try to deny Orfeo鈥檚 passage to the underworld (鈥淐hi mai dell鈥橢rebo鈥). His lament softens and placates them. He is eventually allowed to pass through to the Elysian Fields.

Elysium.

Orfeo is moved by the beauty of the landscape (鈥淐he puro ciel鈥). Heroes and heroines bring Euridice to him (鈥淭orna, o bella, al tuo consorte鈥). Without looking at her, he takes her away.听

ACT III

A dark labyrinth.

Orfeo leads Euridice toward the upper world, forbidden to look at her (鈥淰ieni, segui i miei passi鈥). Orfeo can鈥檛 explain (鈥淰ieni, appaga il tuo consorte!鈥). Euridice panics at the thought of a life without the love of Orfeo (鈥淐he fiero momento鈥). In desperation he turns to her. She dies, again. Grief-stricken, Orfeo wonders how he can live without her (鈥淐he far貌 senza Euridice?鈥). He decides to kill himself. Amor appears and stays Orfeo鈥檚 hand. In response to Orfeo鈥檚 deep love and devotion, Amor revives Euridice. The three return to Earth.

The Temple of Love.

Orfeo, Euridice, Amor, the nymphs, and the shepherds all celebrate the power of love (鈥淭rionfi Amore!鈥).
