In the first of five concerts broadcast in Radio 3 in Concert from this year's Aldeburgh Festival, Karina Canellakis conducts the 大象传媒 Symphony Orchestra in her Aldeburgh Festival debut in a programme that offers ravishing sounds aplenty. From the restless rapture of Wagner鈥檚 Prelude and Liebestod (from his opera Tristan und Isolde) to a striking work about colour-blindness - Red and Green by Austrian composer and 2019 Festival Artist in Residence, Thomas Larcher. Plus two works written when their composers were on the threshold of fame: the Suite from Stravinsky鈥檚 1919 ballet score The Firebird with its startling, novel orchestral effects; and Benjamin Britten鈥檚 first orchestral song cycle 'Our Hunting Fathers' (1936) an inspirational collaboration with WH Auden, which hauntingly taps into the darkness of the Europe of the 1930s. Mark Padmore is the tenor soloist.
