The Umbrella
When Mr McIvor’s brand new umbrella is ruined, his exceptionally thrifty wife finds a little white lie enables her to replace it without depleting her household budget.
A selection of folk stories adapted and read by the celebrated Northern Irish actor James Ellis.
James Ellis was best known as an actor in theatre, radio and television – including Z Cars and Ballykissangel amongst many others – however he was also an accomplished linguist and enjoyed translating stories and folk tales from other languages.
Recorded with an intimate audience of friends around the fire in Corradreenan Farmhouse at the Ulster Folk Museum, this selection of stories features tales of death and the devil, misfortune and miserliness, hardship and heroism, all told with his characteristic light-hearted humour.
