Pause For Thought
Last week you asked me about my name - which - it's true - might be the most common question people ask me - the other being - are you George Harrison's daughter? But, anyway - I was telling you that Jahnavi is another name for Ganga Devi, the goddess who presides over the Ganges river in India - sacred to millions of Hindus. Like most others of my faith, I've grown up acknowledging that there is a divine being presiding over everything, whether something tangible like a mountain, or more subtle like language and music, overlooked by Goddess Saraswati.聽
It's traditional that before performing any activity, one asks for the blessing of the presiding deity. For example when I get up in the morning, I say a prayer when my feet touch the floor, asking forgiveness from Bhumi Devi, the goddess of the earth, for walking on her. I started doing it last year and it's been a helpful reminder not to take the grace of nature's gifts for granted. With the global effects of climate change manifesting more and more, the relationship between human beings and the earth seems like it's being exposed more starkly than ever. When I look around me I see a culture of exploitation that's become deeply engrained and can seem near impossible to completely disconnect from, unless I opt for a rural life.聽
Much as my conscience protests, I've used countless disposable cups and thrown away reusable things; I've turned a blind eye to so much and told myself - it's too hard to change. Recently I've been living in Manhattan and I often seek relief from the concrete chaos by walking to the East River, or the Hudson. Their presence feels sacred to me - tolerant goddesses who flow either side of an island like no other. As I stand on their banks I often think that though I've bathed in the Ganges many times, and appreciated the faith strengthening power of pilgrimage, I don't think that the sacred is something at the other end of a plane journey. I'm convinced more and more that the ecology of my heart is what needs most urgent attention, and that as I clean up there, my thoughts, words and actions will follow - maybe then I could see every ground as holy, and every tree, river and even human being (!) - as worthy of respect and gratitude.
