Doric Quartet and Brett Dean
The Doric Quartet perform the European premiere of Brett Dean's 'Hidden Agendas', Haydn's 'Joke' Quartet and Brahms's String Quintet No 2, live from the Queen's Hall, Edinburgh.
Live from the Queens Hall in Edinburgh the Doric String Quartet perform Haydn’s ‘Joke’ quartet, a piece that caused Clara Schumann to laugh out loud. Then follows the European premiere of ‘Hidden Agendas’ by Australian composer Brett Dean, written specifically for the Doric String Quartet and inspired by ‘the extreme personalities in the current political climate’. After the interval Brett Dean joins the ensemble to perform what was to be Brahms swan song, his second String Quintet Op. 111. After the first rehearsals Brahms’ surgeon friend Theodor Billroth wrote to him saying ‘I have often reflected on the subject of what happiness is for humanity. Well, today in listening to your music, that was happiness.’
