Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison:聽
Someone that's been catching my eye and heart this week is Greta Thunberg - the 16 year old girl who's making waves with her unrelenting message on climate change. As many will know, she's sailing across the Atlantic over the next three weeks, on a solar powered boat, to attend a Climate action summit in New York. She's going about it unconventionally to demonstrate that there are ways of travelling which don't harm the environment. I think she's really brave. It inspires me to see a young woman so deep in her conviction, doing something difficult in the interest of the global community.聽
I mean, I've read the usual sort of snarky comments and finger poking on social media...no surprises there. Yes, she's sailing with a team of professionals, but conditions on board are basic - a blue plastic bucket affair for all calls of nature, and the size of the boat means every swell and storm is experienced to the full. Though they're posting on social media when they can, there's no artifice in their daily experience with the elements. I don't know if I could do it...I remember catching the ferry to Spain when I was 10 - I think it took two or three days to reach Santander. Our initial excitement turned into a queasy bad dream as rough seas had us all counting the hours til we could see dry land again.聽
And that relief when we were finally driving off the boat! I remember the intense smell of petrol and nibbling cautiously on a cracker - which was the first thing I could stomach in days. The Hindu sacred texts feature many histories of enlightened children whose profound words and actions still echo today. Thousands of years ago, a five year old prince called Prahlad - the son of an extremely powerful and materialistic King - sat on his father's lap and sweetly explained to him that his envy, lust, greed and disconnection from nature and God would have terrible long term implications, for the whole world. Greta believes that her message too, has profound implications for the planet. Her actions inspire me to be more responsible in my relationship with the earth, and to never think that I'm too small to make a difference. So I'm watching her progress and hoping her journey is as smooth as can be...
