Pause For Thought
From the Reverend Kate Bottley:
ÌýI can’t remember the first time I heard the Beatles but I can remember seeing the power of their music to make things better.
ÌýI’ve been to a fair few family parties in my time, and I’d like to tell you that these occasions are always ones of joy and harmony but that wouldn’t be entirely true, because every now and again, over vol-au-vents and sausage rolls, a dispute raises its head. There’s never actually anyone who ends up scrapping in the car park, but it has been close a couple of times. There’s something that’s always guaranteed to rescue the situation and restore the harmony and that’s a good tune to dance to. I know what will happen if ‘Twist and shout’ or ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ comes on.Ìý Falling outs forgotten, numerous Aunties will kick off their high-heeled shoes and strut onto the dance floor in stocking-ed feet and give it all they’ve got. Quickly followed by even the most reluctant of dancer, all brought together by the Beatles for a barefoot boogie.
ÌýGoing barefoot is a common response to Holy moments and sacred places, when Moses stood before the Burning Bush, the voice of God urged him to ditch his sandals out of a sign of respect and here at Abbey Road we stand on sort of hallowed ground, not just because of what happened here but because of the power of the music created to unite the divided and get everyone dancing. Paul McCartney on the crossing outside might have been shoeless but the music could never be called soulless. And while I might not agree with John’s claim that they were more popular than Jesus, I uphold the notion that the enduring messages of love and unity in their music have a shared spiritual soul with my Saviour.
ÌýThis summer while on holiday we ventured as a family into the village square for a cocktail or two and the promise of live music. To our delight the live music was a Croatian Beatles tribute band. And so alongside locals and holidaymakers alike, of all ages and languages, there was nothing else to do but kick off our shoes and have a dance. Hallowed ground and hallowed music and a rallying call to come together right now and remember that all we need is love.
