A Child of Our Time

Tom McKinney introduces a concert of music by Britten and Tippett from Symphony Hall Birmingham given by the CBSO and Mirga Gra啪inyt臈-Tyla.

鈥淭he world turns on its dark side鈥, so begins Michael Tippett鈥檚 choral masterpiece 鈥楢 Child of our Time鈥, composed during the early years of the Second World War and giving expression to Tippett鈥檚 hopes for a better world. The performance of the secular oratorio this evening, with a starry cast, opens the CBSO鈥檚 new concert season under its Musical Director Mirga Gra啪inyt臈-Tyla, and is presented alongside a piece in a similar vein, from the same period, by Tippett鈥檚 contemporary, Benjamin Britten. The concert is introduced by Tom McKinney.
