Farming Today This Week: Livestock markets
Anna Jones visits Frome market and finds out how it has started offering emotional support to farmers alongside the importance business of buying and selling of livestock.
Anna Jones concludes Farming Today's week on livestock markets with a visit to Frome. The origins of the market can be traced back to the Doomsday Book but since 1990 its home has been a purpose-built site in Standerwick. Anna speaks to Michael Joyce, Chair of Frome Livestock Auctioneers about the challenges of running markets and whether livestock agents and online sales are competition or complimentary services. In the cafe Anna asks Michael about the market's efforts to provide farmers with emotional support and speaks to the market Chaplain, Revd Clive Fairclough about his role giving farmers a friendly shoulder and a willing ear. She joins the auction and speaks to farmer Martin Hann about sheep prices and the possibility of World Trade Organisation Tariffs in the advent of a no-deal Brexit.
