Pause For Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:
听Today is World Mental Health Day,听set up to create awareness and advocate against social stigma.听听听Growing up 鈥渕ental health鈥 weren鈥檛 really words you heard, but there is no doubt in my mind that people were suffering:
An elderly Great Uncle would be described as 鈥渟truggling since the war鈥 or 鈥渟hell shocked鈥 鈥 he probably had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
People were described as having 鈥楾he Blues鈥, or 鈥楾he Baby Blues鈥.听 What they probably had was depression, or Post-Natal Depression.听听 鈥淎 bit manic鈥 鈥 or even 鈥渉aving a turn鈥︹ to describe psychotic episodes or bipolar.
Singer, Karen Carpenter, was said in the media to have 鈥淭he Slimmer鈥檚 Disease鈥
鈥 she died of the most deadly of all they mental health disorders, Anorexia
Nervosa.
So, the illnesses were, to my mind, definitely taking place, what was lacking
was the vocabulary to accurately talk about them, laced with a large dose of
stigma.
I can鈥檛 understand the stigma if I am honest.
So many people that I love deeply, have suffered from eating disorders, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, depression, suicidal ideation, self-harm, psychosis, and more.听 People I care about have been sectioned by the Mental Health Act 鈥 some of them multiple times.
But it has never occurred to me to think less of these people. It has never occurred to me that they should be ashamed of their illness, or even embarrassed.
On the contrary, these are some of the bravest people I know. The very thing that will possibly help them through their struggles: their mind, is the very organ of their body which is under attack. I feel like they should be so proud of themselves and the strength they demonstrate fighting the battle for wellness every single day.
And maybe this is why I get annoyed by some people from faith communities when I hear them say that "people with depression are ungrateful to God", or 鈥渢heir struggles are a punishment for sin鈥, or even 鈥渢hey are possessed by evil spirits鈥.
To my mind these are comments that fail to understand the complexity of mental health illness, let alone the Mercy of God.
Mental illness is as real as cancer, or heart disease, and whilst solace may be found in faith, I believe听there should be no stigma, nor any embarrassment in seeking out professional help.
