Bartok Plus from LSO St Luke's in London with the Carducci Quartet

The Carducci Quartet play Bartok's Romanian Folk Dances and his String Quartet No 3 alongside Haydn's String Quartet in D, Op 20 No 4, with its dance-like 'gypsy-style' minuet.

Fiona Talkington continues Radio 3's Bartok Plus series, in which all six of Bartok's string quartets are put in context alongside works that both influenced the composer's own compositional evolution and chart his journey from Hungary to America. Today, the Carducci Quartet illustrate the influence of Hungarian and Romanian folk dances on Bartok's middle-period compositional style, performing his Romanian Folk Dances and his dance-like 3rd String Quartet. Haydn too was influenced by the folk music of the region and nowhere more than in his tuneful String Quartet in D major with its playful minuet 'alla zingarese', or 'gypsy style'.
