Vic Dickenson played trombone in a unique way, and in company with an impressive list of the greatest names in jazz - Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie.
When Vic Dickenson, the laid back trombonist from Ohio started making records he did so with many of the greatest names in jazz - Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie among them. In the mid 1950s he brought together a quality septet to record four albums for the Vanguard label. Producer John Hammond described these as 'the finest examples of mainstream jazz ever recorded.' This week a focus on some great sessions.
