Pause For Thought
From cultural producer Tanya Muneera Williams:
Last week Sunday, I ticked off one of the many things that had been gathering dust on my wish list for at least 2 years; I performed and talked for a聽particular聽prestigious organisation.
Before receiving my invitation, I had practised in the mirror many
times in hopes that one day I would take to their stage.聽
I had all these ideas of what I would talk about, poetry and spoken-word as a
form of therapy, poetry for confidence building, poetry as a daily practice,
but when I met with Mel, the event鈥檚 organiser, she simply said:聽
鈥淚 want a poem and a talk that reflects your relationship with Bristol鈥.聽
This may sound like a simple task, but as someone who moved out of Bristol at the first chance I could get, and having just returned 17 years later, I felt under-qualified for the task.
It got to the point where I was sabotaging my potential for
excellence through procrastination. I met with Barney my speaking coach, and he
asked me to read what I had so far.聽
I pulled out my crumpled tea-stained script and read it to him.聽 I don鈥檛
know what the tell-tale signs were but he had the wisdom to sense what was
going wrong was in聽the heart rather than the mind.
He pushed me to think about the reasons why I left Bristol and聽the stories I had told myself that made me doubt my ability. Stories of isolation, stories of being an outcast, stories of not fitting in.聽
Right before getting to the point of unearthing some of these stories I felt fatigued and my heart physically ached, at that moment I would have done anything to avoid that discomfort. But as I sat with my hurt it began to melt away, the lies that I had held so dear, all of a sudden became irrational.
Jalaluddin Rumi, 14th century Persian聽Islamic Jurist, once said:
鈥淧atience is not sitting and waiting, it is foreseeing, it is looking at the thorn and seeing the rose鈥.
聽I didn鈥檛 realise I was in need of patience, yet once I looked at the聽thorn, I started to grow.
聽Last Sunday, the stage became my garden and, firmly planted with purpose, I bloomed.
