Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Tanya Muneera Williams, cultural producer:

In 1995 I got my first job which gave me the confidence to tell my parents though they had done well in raising me, I could take it from here, I no longer needed pocket money, and they were relieved of their guardianship duties.聽

They laughed.

1995 was also a year of friendship, my girls meant everything to me, I was loyal to a fault and would protect their secrets by any means necessary, and for the most part, it was reciprocated.

We flocked together like our own unique breed of birds.聽

We liked the same music, had the same Jodici posters stuck on our walls and we were into the same boys.聽

Some say girls mature faster than boys, I don鈥檛 know about that, but I do remember no sooner than the school bell had rung, with equal eagerness as the year 7s聽escaping the confines of school, each day there聽were聽older boys waiting聽to pick up their girlfriends.聽

I didn鈥檛 have a boyfriend, and I used to cry for hours on end thinking was I too fat, was I too black, what was it about me that was not good enough to have a boyfriend.

Years later I met with one of my friends who had an older boyfriend in school,聽we tried聽to workout聽at聽what point our girlhood聽was聽tainted, the boys were allowed to play football and acted silly, but we had to be mature and that led to us thinking we were like adults who should be with older boys.聽

Going into schools today as a development officer, I see similar things, maybe not so glaring, but there is a clear pressure on girls to 鈥渓ook and be mature鈥

Yasmin Mogahed, the American Muslim scholar said:聽

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淢y value as a woman is not measured by the size of my waist

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 or the number of men who like me. My worth as a human being

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 is measured on a higher scale鈥.

If I could speak to the younger me I would say, you are so much more than how others see you. My prayer to young girls everywhere is that they know their worth is not held in the hands of men.
