Pause For Thought

A few weeks ago, it dawned on me that I hadn鈥檛 taken a holiday聽in 2019, so a break was urgently needed.

As it would likely be my only getaway, it had to live up to many things, it had to be relaxing but adventurous, beautiful yet familiar, stimulating, while at the same time giving me plenty of time to contemplate on what I want to leave in 2019 and take forward into 2020.

聽A lot to ask, my brother joked, but being determined as I am, I knew I would come up with something, I made my intention and carried on with my day.

聽About a week later I got an email entitled 鈥榣adies of light鈥�.

聽Within the Quran, one of my favourite chapters is called the light, and my poetry is scattered with reference to light and illumination, so the subject line pricked my attention straight away.

聽It was an invitation to a women-only retreat, the only thing is, being in the company of women outside of my immediate friendship group frightens the hell out of me.聽聽

It brings me back to my uncomfortable teen years and the pressure to impress the popular girls, all while feeling really judged. Besides, for most people I know, a restful vacation would be blue skies and a hot beach with a mocktail in hand.聽聽

聽Going against my slight fear this weekend I found myself boarding with 12 other women in a draughty converted barn, in Kent. I was the last to arrive. In my mind, everyone had already bonded and I was going to be that annoying extra wheel who had to have all of the jokes explained to her because she was late.

But as we sat around a crackling fireplace, sharing our intentions in the pocket of time we had away from our day-to-day lives, I heard an echo of myself in each of their stories.

聽We were Women looking for stillness, for resetting, for remembrance of the divine. Women with flaws and insecurities, trying to connect with our strength and the light within us. 聽I never considered myself to be closed, but a lesson that keeps coming back to me is that I believe if we are open to our vulnerabilities and willing to face our insecurities, we will always find light, even in the hearts of strangers.
