Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison:

I'm a sucker for choirs, and it's one of my favourite things about this sing-songy time of year - around Christmas it's that much more likely that you bump into a choir in your train station or on your doorstep. It's also a time of year I tend to hear people singing who would normally only do it in the shower, and I love that! Granted, it may be because that Slade song is playing again while I do my grocery shop, but I'm not complaining - I love hearing people's voices.

There's something so special and personal, especially if someone's putting their heart into it. A few days ago I went to an evening mass here in London featuring a gospel choir. It wasn't a particularly well known church - but my friends and I decided to pop in. The choir聽were ordinary looking - not dressed up at all - some even kept their parkas on! But once they started singing it was just magic.

The ability of humans to speak and sing is something I never cease to be amazed by. I know that probably sounds ridiculous, but when you think about it...just two bands of muscle, opening and closing as air flows through - but that vibration carries what's in the heart and allows it to be heard. It's a great gift.

In my own faith tradition singing is really important. It's a musical prayer, it's a way to pray with others in community, and ultimately a path to enlightenment. No exaggeration - singing has saved me in many dark moments, and brought me joy like nothing else.

聽The other day I heard someone quietly singing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, and the line - 'let your heart be light' jumped out at me. I don't always find it easy to let my heart be light when my mind is heavy with worries about the future and past regrets.聽

But when I start to sing, I do find 'my troubles to be far away'...and I really do feel that light in my heart. It's just a simple little thought, but this week I'm giving thanks for having a voice and hopeful that I can use it to speak and sing from the heart always.聽
