Salzburg Festival - Brahms, Joachim and Ravel

Salzburg Festival 2019. Highlights from the festival presented by Sarah Walker. Featuring Christian Gerhaher, Tabea Zimmermann and Patricia Kopachintskaja.

Sarah Walker presents highlights from the 2019 Salzburg Festival.

This Summer's theme was 'Time with Enescu' charting the life and times of Romanian musician and composer Georrge Enescu across the last years of the nineteenth century into the first half of the twentieth.

Conductor and pianist, Enescu is best known as a violinist and composer and it鈥檚 no wonder that his chamber works written for violin are landmarks in the twentieth century repertoire.

Brahms was Enescu's first musical hero as he was sent to study music in Vienna aged just seven in 1888, and although later in life Wagner's music also influenced Enescu, Brahms is never far away.

When Enescu left Vienna, still only a teenager, he was drawn to ever fashionable fin-de-siecle Paris, and enrolled in composition classes where he joined his contemporary Maurice Ravel.
