The Pawnbroker and his friends used to cut the roofs of old cars and use them to sail on the river Foyle. His favourite was the roof of a VW Beetle.

The Pawnbroker said he and the boys in his street in the Brandywell used to cut the roofs off the old dumped cars, turned them upside down and sailed on the river Foyle in them. His favourite was the roof of a VW Beetle. Pawney says if you saw children doing that today you'd go mad.
