Pause For Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

We had a lovely day on Saturday celebrating my Mum鈥檚 81st and my sister-in-law鈥檚 60th birthdays at my Uncle鈥檚 roller disco in North London. I can actually roller skate 鈥 so always feel super accomplished when we go! 听We then went out to dinner to celebrate my youngest daughter heading off to East Africa the next day to volunteer in a school.

We joyfully returned home, laughing and joking, only to find police cars outside of the house.

We parked, rather nervously, and my husband got out. 鈥淚s everything okay officer?鈥 he asked one of the many police outside the house. 鈥淵es sir. We鈥檝e just discovered a cannabis factory next door.鈥

To be honest, it was the first time I can recall the words 鈥渃annabis鈥 and 鈥渇actory鈥 being used in the same sentence 鈥 but apparently we had one - hiding in plain sight 鈥 right next door to us!

Now, we鈥檝e lived in our home for 22 years. When we moved in, we knew all our neighbours up and down, and across the street. Our neighbourhood was a thriving mix of people, many who had lived in their homes for decades. There was Sheila and Keith, Eileen, the Patels, Tony, Harish, Wajahat a renowned musician, and Fritzco and Georgia, the previous owners of the house now being forensically examined by police.

Islam is very focused on being good to one鈥檚 neighbours, designated as forty homes in every direction, but it鈥檚 hard when neighbours simply disappear into what feels like a culture of anonymity.

I used to chat over the fence to my neighbours, share food, and gardening tips. As their houses have been purchased and rented out to a rotation of different people, it has been hard to keep track, let alone build relationships. I鈥檝e felt a loss of community, of human interactions, of neighbourliness.

I understand that times move on. I am not yearning for some nostalgic age. I do however want to talk to my neighbours, to recognise their faces and know their names, to share some humanity. It seems to me that all faiths promote this, and despite this rather strange incident, it is something I will continue to strive for! I鈥檒l even carry on striving to share gardening tips 鈥 but maybe not with the chaps running the cannabis factory!
