Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

Last week I got a letter from one of our regular listeners. She told me life has been tough for her family recently. The breadwinner in the family had to retire due to ill health. The family went from 鈥榖eing comfortable鈥 to 鈥榲irtual poverty鈥 overnight, she wrote.

In the last paragraph she added: 鈥淲hen you are poor with no money, the future is always in another place.鈥

That insight is haunting me. It tells me that a once well off family now struggles from day to day without much hope of a better life.

It strikes me that many of us can unwittingly condemn ourselves to such a hopeless future, not by circumstances but by choice.

We decide we cannot change how we live; we refuse to search for a different way of life. Hell has been described as an eternity locked into the present with no possibility of change. That would be hell for me because I have to believe that every day has new possibilities.

The Bible says: 鈥淵ou do not know when the Lord is coming but be ready for him when he does.鈥 That tells me to live each day as if it were my last and someday I鈥檒l be right.

Because of my calling I regularly sit beside some very ill patients who are struggling to come to terms with the fact that end of their life is close at hand. I am constantly moved to utter admiration by how positive and calm they become when they accept peacefully what they cannot change.

Cardinal Newman was recently canonised a saint by the Catholic Church. His motto was: 鈥淭o grow is to change, and to be perfect is to change often.鈥 He also wrote 鈥淭o be holy is not so much doing this or not doing that; holiness is a state of mind of living habitually in the light of a better world.鈥

The future doesn鈥檛 have to be an unreachable other place because Hope is always at hand.
