Pause For Thought
From Dave Tomlinson,聽writer and vicar at large:
Walking along a bustling London street I happened to look down and noticed something chalked on the pavement: 鈥楩eeling knackered? Hit the reset button.鈥 Setting aside the mystery of who takes the time to scribble such wisdom, I smiled at the fact that it could have been written just for me.
聽鈥楽witch it off and back on again鈥 is a mantra of the digital age when computers and other devices freeze or become very slow: maybe infected by some bug picked up along the cyber highway. But as the pavement tutor suggests, it鈥檚 very similar with people: our system, too, may become 鈥榠nfected鈥 with anxieties, distractions, fears and the expectations of other people (not to mention the expectations we place on ourselves), causing us to 鈥榝reeze鈥 on the inside or suffer energy-drain.
My wife is much better than me at knowing when it鈥檚 time to stop, to reboot the system. 鈥楩or goodness sake, Dave, give it rest鈥, she鈥檒l say. 鈥楾ake a break. Watch some telly. Go for a walk. Get an early night for once, you鈥檒l be much clearer about things in the morning.鈥 And of course, she is 谤颈驳丑迟鈥驳补颈苍!
One of my favourite sayings of Jesus is where (frankly) he sounds a bit like my wife; 鈥楽top worrying about what you can鈥檛 change鈥, he says. It鈥檚 impossible by worrying to add even a single hour to your life. Focus, instead, on being grateful for what you have and let the anxieties look after themselves.鈥
If I鈥檓 honest, I鈥檓 a sucker for having too many apps running 鈥 both digitally and mentally. I like to think I鈥檓 a great multi-tasker and that this is a good thing. However, I was shocked recently to discover that multi-tasking causes the IQ to drop by a whole 10 points 鈥 the equivalent of losing a night鈥檚 sleep!
Yet I know that this isn鈥檛 simply a matter of mental and emotional efficiency; it鈥檚 also about quality of life. I can鈥檛 possibly find proper satisfaction in something when my mind is also on a dozen other things; I can鈥檛 fully connect with another person when my mind is switching here and there.聽
So, I鈥檇 better be off to close a few more windows.
