Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Laura Marks, a campaigner for social action and interfaith relationships.

My husband Dan is not a great romantic. He proposed marriage in a layby - and I chose my own engagement ring.

However, he does his best and last Friday, like many other long-suffering partners, he appeared on the doorstep ready for shabbat, clutching a colossal bunch of top-quality supermarket deep red roses and a card resplendent with cut out hearts and a fuzzy message.

This year, turning our backs on overpriced, jam-packed restaurants, we stayed home. My valentine鈥檚 gift to Dan was a roast chicken dinner, and a giant cupcake smothered in pink icing and glittery sprinkles 鈥 quite something, as I鈥檓 both a hardened vegetarian and a serial dieter.聽

As we celebrated Valentine鈥檚 day, and my social media heaved with messages of love - not necessarily for me 鈥 I couldn鈥檛 escape this crimson tinted day of coupledom.

Whilst Valentine鈥檚 day is not traditionally Jewish, the concept of love is ingrained in our history, culture, families and scriptures going right back to King Solomon鈥檚 Song of Songs, with lines like: 鈥I am for my beloved, and my beloved is for me.鈥櫬

Sadly, it鈥檚 not that simple with nearly 8 million people in Britain living alone and isolation, a modern-day plague.

A survey by mental health campaign Time to Change found 66% of people questioned said they had no one to speak to about mental health, money or relationships.聽

As I do each Friday, and with loneliness on my mind, I called Raphi, my youngest, sadly still single son for our mother son chat, what some might call interrogation.聽 He was busy putting the final touches to his own dinner in 鈥 a slap up supper for an assorted group of friends - transforming Valentines Day into a celebration of friendship, frolic and take-away pizza.

As I thought about Raphi ripping open bags of crisps and welcoming his friends, I started making a list of my solo friends in one more social media group for next Friday鈥檚 shabbat dinner.

鈥榃ho welcomes his friend with a smile鈥, says the old Jewish proverb, 鈥榠s as one with giving the finest gifts in the world鈥

I will wear my warmest most welcoming smile for Valentines next year, but Dan, if you鈥檙e listening, don鈥檛 think it replaces my red roses.
