Pause For Thought
From Rae Duke, Religion and Ethics teacher and broadcaster.
So - it鈥檚 April Fools Day 鈥 and, as I鈥檝e said in lots of video chats with friends recently, had you said at the start of 2020 that we鈥檇 be where we are now, you wouldn鈥檛 have fooled me; I鈥檇 have thought it was one big joke.
Yet here we are! 8 days into home schooling鈥 Fifth Harmony鈥檚 鈥榃ork From Home鈥 our theme-tune鈥 hearts overflowing with gratitude for the NHS鈥
It seems crazy to think that just a few weeks ago I was with hundreds of people at the National Theatre for a live podcast recording. The event was all about failure; about how, though historically personal failures have been things to keep schtum about, there鈥檚 lots to gain from exposing them and delighting a bit in these things that have gone wrong for us.
I was with my friend Els who I鈥檝e known since we were 6 so, side by side, we had itemized accounts of both our comings a cropper and riding life鈥檚 stormier waves. (One weekend I pulled her out of quicksand then, an hour later she had to tether me to her rucksack, my vision so obscured by a bad bout of hayfever!)
The talk at the National Theatre shed light on how our experiences, the negative ones particularly, can make us see the world in a different way. They鈥檙e the things, no matter how painful at the time, that make us grow and lead us to wisdom; and so should be reframed as our strengths.
It鈥檚 struck me since how much the overriding lessons of that night might be applied to what we鈥檙e going through on planet earth right now. If we can rethink our failures as our triumphant learnings, can鈥檛 we also reevaluate this time, seeing it as a sacred one?
Kahil Gibran, the spiritual mastermind who embraced the best of Christian, Jewish and Islamic teachings wrote, 鈥渙ut of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.鈥
Might it be possible that the world will we emerge from this, having taken stock, having re-centered, having collaborated; enriched with a fresh understanding of just how deeply connected to one another we are.
Though this will pass and won鈥檛 define us 鈥 it鈥檇 be my hope that the solidarity and invincible togetherness on display will do.
