Pause For Thought

I have had a song buzzing around my brain this week. It鈥檚 Joni Mitchell鈥檚 Big Yellow Taxi Cab and the words that I keep coming back to are:

听鈥淒on鈥檛 it always seem to go / that you don鈥檛 know what you got till its gone.鈥�

听The last two weeks in lock down I have realised there are so many things I took for granted:

听Being able to hug my Dad when I dropped in to see him.

Walking into a coffee shop with a friend.

Hearing children playing football on the field opposite my house.

听Now they are not part of my normal routine I recognise more clearly how precious these things are to me. I wonder why I didn鈥檛 appreciate them properly before. Perhaps because I spent my time thinking about the things I didn鈥檛 have 鈥� the car I wanted, the dream holiday I was saving up for, the elusive premiership title for Liverpool.听 听

听Strangely in these days of lock down I realise I can commit the same thought crime again. Rather than spending my time lamenting what I can鈥檛 do, where I can鈥檛 go, who I can鈥檛 see I need to remember to be thankful for what I do have:

听A safe place to live.

A loving family around me.

Caring neighbours.

A magnificent health care system.

Food to eat.

Access to the world through digital devices.

听Many people in our world can鈥檛 even enjoy these privileges. I think of those living in makeshift shelters in refugee camps, those caught in the crossfire in Syria, Afghanistan and South Sudan, those miles from home in India. What can they hold on to when all the trappings of life are stripped away?

听Jesus once asked his followers a powerful question:

鈥淲hat good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?鈥�

听In these days of lock down I am beginning to recognise the truth in that question. In order to be happy we don鈥檛 need the whole world. Perhaps we can find both God and our true selves when we recognise what we do have and are thankful for it.

I realise I need to say thank you more. So let me start by saying thank you to all of you who are working hard today hard to keep us safe, fed and connected I might not know your names or your faces but I am grateful nonetheless.
