Pause For Thought

A Pause For Thought especially for the 大象传媒鈥檚 Media Editor... Here鈥檚 old media meeting new.

On social media this week, I saw a tweet from radio historian Andy Walmsley: a photo of radio listings, this week 50 years ago. It was the week of big changes 鈥� the biggest! 鈥� for Radios 1, 2, 3 and 4 鈥� when the stations nailed their colours to the mast.

Radio 1 became pop. Radio 2 swapped some heavier speech for lighter music. Radio 3 went higher-brow with classical, and Radio 4 kept talks, religion and plays, but increased news and current affairs. So new shows began. This week is the half-centenary of: Start The Week, PM, The World Tonight... and on Radio 2, Pause For Thought!

Yes, in April 1970, Radio 2 added more music, but kept a slot or two of inspiration for the nation. Of sanity for humanity. Of encouragement for the... well not much rhymes with 鈥榚ncouragement鈥�.

So Happy 50th Birthday to this very slot!

Of course, many recent birthdays and celebrations have been... unusual. My daughter turns seven soon 鈥� it鈥檚 not quite sunk in yet that it鈥檒l be underattended, at least in person 鈥� friends and family might appear on the laptop, but they鈥檒l have to blow hard to help with the candles. And this Easter weekend will be odd for Christians who鈥檇 normally celebrate in church.

I guess celebration dates, from birthdays to Easter, are fairly arbitrary markers of the passage of time. But I think it鈥檚 more important than ever to celebrate them, however we can. We鈥檒l leave Musical Chairs for another time.

With Easter, we finish Lent 鈥� another annual marker of time. When we started Lent 40 odd days ago, perhaps symbolically giving up things, we didn鈥檛 know just how much we鈥檇 give up by the end of it. What started out as a symbolic reminder of Jesus in the wilderness, now feels pretty wilderness-y itself.

But Easter too is a symbolic reminder, of hope, victory and celebration to come. So maybe these smaller celebrations 鈥� from video-call birthday parties, to kitchen Easter Egg hunts 鈥� can remind us there are bigger celebrations up ahead. Maybe that鈥檚 what hope is all about.

So to Pause For Thought, Happy Birthday 鈥� and to all, Happy Easter. I鈥檒l be thinking of the big celebration, when it comes.
