Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Dave Tomlinson, writer and vicar at large:

During one of our last journeys on a tube in London before the lockdown, my wife Pat and I nervously boarded a Northern line train. We decided to sit on the seats that fold down, close to the door for a quick escape.

However, probably due to my anxious state, for the first (and hopefully last) time, I neglected the vital bit where you fold down the seat before sitting on it! Crashing to the floor, I landed unceremoniously on my backside – in front of everyone!

Now, it’s fair to say that having lived just over six decades, I still see myself as around 35 on the inside – and pretty cool, at that! I always refuse (graciously) when a younger person offers me a seat on public transport. And if I trip on the street, I’ll invariably pretend it never happened. I have an image to maintain!

So, I was not well-pleased to find myself perched on the floor, feeling like a twit – my ‘concerned’ wife giggling near-uncontrollably! Immediately, I was offered helping hands from fellow travellers – the ones I was trying at all costs to keep my distance from. And frankly, I needed the help.

My dad was disabled throughout his adult life. He was a deeply independent man who hated to ask for help and I grew up witnessing his determined – sometimes painful – struggle to do things for himself. How I regret that I wasn’t always available to help him when he really needed me. ‘If I had two good legs like yours, son’, he’d say as I was rushing off to another game of footie, ‘I would never ask anyone for anything.’

For better or worse, I reckon my (sometimes) pig-headed independence is part of my dad’s legacy. Yet as time’s gone on, I’ve come to realise the truth that no one is an island – and never more so than now when, due to the pandemic, I begin to appreciate how many people sustain us on a daily basis.

Churches may be closed, but I reckon 8pm on Thursday– when people gather at their doors to celebrate courageous NHS carers and others, and to acknowledge our dependence on them is as holy a moment as you’ll find.

I hope it long outlives the virus.
