Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Krish Kandiah, founding director of a national charity:

Can I begin with a big shout out to teachers. You are amazing! I鈥檝e only managed three weeks of Project Homeschool, but most of you have been doing this enthusiastically for years. I鈥檝e only got six children, so how you manage classes of 30+ each day is mind-blowing. After lockdown I鈥檓 going to be asking teachers I know how they juggle the pencil sharpening and the toilet breaks and the slow printer queues at the same time as helping children complete simple fun exercises, or revise for online tests.听 And I鈥檒l be asking them how they survived without the help of screen experts like Joe Wicks, Carol Vorderman, Oti Mabuse and Gareth Malone. 听

For me, the homeschooling adventure has been much more about discovering what I need to learn than what I need to teach. My 13-year-old has had to show me how to turn decimals into fractions and scour Shakespeare to find examples of heroism. Between the 6 of them I have also had masterclasses in art, dance, music, PE, computer studies, politics and engineering.

My children are my teachers in more important ways too. Watching them work out working together has helped me learn what cooperation, resilience, forgiveness and adaptability mean in times of crisis. They have reminded me that laughter aids learning, and how taking time to support each other may be more important than completing our own tasks.

Jesus had a lot to say about learning from children. He once said:

鈥淟et the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.听Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child听will never enter it.鈥

These words challenge me to approach God with the sincerity and authenticity of a child. They comfort me as I don鈥檛 have to pretend to have all the answers but I can come to him with childlike inquisitiveness, honest questions and a stumbling faith. Even in the middle of the lock down, surrounded by my children, I can hope to find God.

听Back to school for me now. Turns out I need to re-learn the exceptions to the weird rule 鈥淚 before E except after C鈥.
