Pause For Thought
![Pause For Thought](https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/160x90/p06f5tr9.jpg)
From Dave Tomlinson,Ìýwriter and vicar at large:
Ìý
Last week I heard the wonderful news that a couple I married three years ago had given birth to twin boys – Nico & Leon. Apart from anything else, the sheer joy of these little ones’ entrance into the world reminded me that life goes on despite the pandemic. It made me reach for a glass of bubbly and cry ‘Hurrah!’
Ìý
Covid-19 may take away many things, but we must surely never allow it to deprive us of joyful imagination – our glorious human capacity to envisage a better, loving, welcoming world for the likes of Nico & Leon and then to help create it.
Ìý
I find it exciting that a survey published on Friday revealed that only 9% of Britons want life to return to ‘normal’ once the coronavirus outbreak is over. We have apparently noticed significant changes during the lockdown including cleaner air, more wildlife, and stronger communities, and most of us don’t want to lose these changes.
Ìý
I can’t imagine anyone not wanting the present cloud hanging over us to lift but it seems as if these days of confinement are offering a glimpse of a different approach to life that we find appealing: an approach that recognises that ‘the health of people and planet are inseparable’ – that we are a global family.
Ìý
On a more personal level, I think the lockdown is helping us to look more clearly at our priorities. I recently stumbled on a quote from Lin Yutang, the Chinese philosopher who wrote that ‘besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of nonessentials.’
Ìý
While I certainly didn’t choose to eliminate nonessentials, it was forced upon me, I am indeed discovering more vividly things which are essential – frequent contact with family, friends and neighbours, the sound of birds, a good book, a meal around the table. I’m also aware of essentials I’m missing – hugs from friends, freedom to get around…and watching Liverpool march toward the title!
Ìý
I look forward to baptising Nico & Leon once this is over and being part of their world which I hope we will help to create as a place of global sustainability, of friendship, hospitality and justice for all.
