Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Krish Kandiah, founding director of a national charity:

Last year we redecorated our kitchen to include a floor-to-ceiling world map over an entire wall. It鈥檚 brilliant for meal-time quizzes on capital cities. It鈥檚 also a symbolic statement. I want my family to grasp that we are world citizens. As we eat, we think about which countries our foods are sourced from: bananas from Costa Rica, tea from India.听 We remember the billion people around the world who face going to bed hungry. We wave to our friends and family members in Malaysia, America, and Albania.

We鈥檝e made a few extra international calls recently and we have noticed a heightened sense that we are all in this together. Although we are all in isolation we are also connecting like never before. Thanks to living in a global village a virus can spread very quickly - but so can hope.听 Two Italian boys playing 鈥淰iva La Vida鈥 put a smile on our faces. A Frenchman running a charity marathon on his balcony or Chinese people perfecting the Wuhan shuffle greeting have inspired us to laugh, sing and give. When we clap for carers on Thursday nights, we join with the Spanish, Dutch and French people who also applaud their courageous health workers.

Today marks the 50th Earth day. Back in 1970 we thought it would be a great idea to recognise that we need to all take responsibility together for our planet.听 Now more than ever we need to come together and look towards our shared future.

Two thousand years ago Jesus had a similar idea when he spoke these words in his famous Sermon on the Mount:

鈥楤lessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth.鈥

What does it mean to be meek? I don鈥檛 think Jesus is asking me to be weak or timid. He certainly wasn鈥檛. I believe Jesus鈥 challenge is to show strength through humility, to control power and use it with and for the benefit of others. We need this attitude as we figure out how to show solidarity with people around our world.

This is what I will remember today as I sit down to eat breakfast in front of the eight-foot high world map 鈥 with my Spanish orange juice and French toast with a dash of hot chilli sauce from Argentina.
