Dermot O鈥橪eary joins Jo for Storytime, reading John Gillespie Magee Jr鈥檚 World War II poem High Flight.

High Flight was written by the 19-year-old wartime Spitfire pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was serving with the No. 412 Squadron in Royal Air Force Digby in Lincolnshire when he wrote the poem.

John Gillespie Magee was killed in 1941 when his plane collided in mid-air over Lincolnshire. His poem was sent home to his parents weeks before the crash, and gained fame when it was picked up by the American media after his death.

High Flight is one of the world's best-known poems, loved by aviators, astronauts and politicians. President Ronald Reagan quoted from it in his broadcast to the nation following the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.
