Pause For Thought
Every time I see the mountain on that triangular chocolate bar, it conjures up images of a time just a year ago, when I was filming one of my first short films as a novice director. For the last day of shooting, our location was high, at about 4000m near the peak of a mountain called the Breithorn in Switzerland.Â
At the top, the wind speed massively picked up. Our stoic Polish safety guide seemed calm, but from the angle of his eyebrows I could tell that he was ‘slightly concerned’. I had to move right next to each crew member to shout directions in their ears, which they then passed on like a painful game of Chinese whispers. The gusts were getting so strong that some of our cameraman’s gear decided to just fly away; and we were then concerned, that the same might happen to our actors, so we had to dig them little foot holds for grip.
But, as the camera rolled and the main actor stepped out into the storm, isolated and exposed, looking out across 100s of kilometres of mountain range, the story I wanted to tell came to life. Both I, and the actor, and the character I’d written, were at the mercy of that mountain. When faced with such power I felt I had very little control. The enormity of the scene before me, made me feel afraid, but also strangely reverent; the feeling that there was something beyond me, something larger even than any of the storms I might ever face. In the bible, a character called Elijah is similarly isolated on a stormy mountaintop. But in his moment of exposure he hears God’s voice most clearly.Â
And this is the story I wanted to tell, that in the stormiest moments: in a logistically nightmarish shoot, or in isolation during a pandemic, these, I believe, are the moments when we see the world with the most clarity. For me moments of exposure are often when I meet with God. But whilst I’m comforted knowing there is one greater in control, at the end of our adventure, in a Swiss café I was also relieved to know the only mountain I would face for some time, would be that on my chocolate bar’s packaging.
