Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Remona Aly, Freelance journalist and editor:聽
The Sunday just gone - I celebrated a very different kind of Eid, marking the end of a very different kind of Ramadan. Previous Eid parties have seen our garden teeming with neighbours, family and friends - from grey haired uncles sipping sweet tea in the shade, to giggling kids going hyper after too many Eid treats. This year, instead of the soul-warming blend of chatter, laughter and group selfies, it felt like tumbleweed would roll across the grass at any moment.
But I was still determined to make it special. Before religiously eating myself into a stupor, I pulled out the Eid mubarak bunting, hung colourful lanterns on the branches of our old apple tree, and dressed up to the nines in a bling Indian outfit, all ready for our virtual family party. Eid means joy, it means festival, it means togetherness. Just as Eid is my trophy for making it through a month of fasting, I think our collective reward is nearly in sight following a long and challenging lockdown. After the sacrifice of distancing from loved ones, the prize of holding them even closer we hope is almost within reach. After the hardship, after the hunger, we will feast.聽
There鈥檚 a Sufi Muslim tale about two beggars. The first beggar came to the door of a house, hastily asking for a loaf of bread. He was given the last piece of bread, but it was dry and stale. Yet, he grabbed it and went on his way. The second beggar came asking for bread, and he waited patiently, his hunger growing by the minute, until finally a fresh, warm loaf was baked for him. The wisdom of this story goes, that nobody said the waiting would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it. I reckon, after all this time, the patience and the waiting will pay off. I take heart from this story, and from my 7th century role model, Prophet Muhammad who said, 鈥淜now that there is much good in being patient. Victory will come with patience, affliction will come with relief, and with hardship will come ease.鈥 That鈥檚 a promise that for me, is as welcome as any loaf of freshly baked bread.
