Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Matt Woodcock, Church of England Pioneer Minister and Mission Supporter in the Diocese of York:聽
As you might imagine, my parenting skills have been severely tested these last few months.聽 Our twin girls have forced me to find new levels of patience. It鈥檚 been a verbal bombardment. Our lockdown days peppered with their shouts of: 鈥楾hat鈥檚 the one I wanted鈥. 鈥楥an you tell her, daddy?鈥. And their personal favourite: 鈥業t鈥檚 not fair.鈥 At times I鈥檝e felt like the floundering father of two Veruca Salts. The nagging has been relentless.聽 Mainly about us getting a pet.聽 It鈥檚 all they want in life. I started the other day firmly announcing that no animals of any description would be joining our family. By teatime we were weighing up the possibility of a hamster or sausage dog. Anything for a moment鈥檚 peace. And then there鈥檚 been the homeschooling. All I seem to hear is that their popular teacher Mr Brookfield 鈥榙oesn't do it like that', 'Mr Brookfield would know' or 'Mr Brookfield lets us'. In between trying to teach collective nouns and stopping the hair pulling, I鈥檝e had some 鈥業t鈥檚 not fair鈥 moments of my own. Times of despondency and frustration.聽
Upset at not being able to cuddle my struggling grandma. Worried about the mental health of our community鈥檚 most vulnerable. My prayers have often been exasperated ones offered through gritted teeth. And yet the great challenge of my Christian faith is to draw closer to God in times of test and struggle. To somehow use them to invigorate my spiritual life. Few Christian leaders I know have suffered more hardship than the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu.聽 He retires this week. His faith has shown me that it鈥檚 possible to stay cheerful, encouraging and helpful to others - in good times and bad. He once described being on the receiving end of such kind-heartedness while recovering from major cancer surgery a few years ago. Archbishop John spoke of being immersed in a 鈥榯sunami鈥 of love, prayer and support from friends and strangers.聽
It helped him through. In the challenging days and weeks ahead, I hope to create a few waves of my own. I鈥檝e certainly made those twins of ours a bit happier. We鈥檝e welcomed our first pets to the family. Two Guinea pigs. Ginny and Hermione.聽 Let鈥檚 see if Mr Brookfield can top that one, Zoe.
